Alzheimer's disease was first described in 1906 by the German psychiatrist and neuropathologist A. Alzheimer. It is a type of dementia and it affects the largest number of patients. Today, 197,000 people suffer from dementia in Greece and it is estimated that in 2050 this number will be 354,000. The main difficulty of this disease is that it inductively and incrementally destroys “the space and time navigation system" of the patient. This is a condition that only coldhearted people can ignore and move away from. On the other hand, there are people willing to offer their support and love, people ready to make sacrifices.

Introduction to our Federation: Scientists, who know the unbearable burden that patients and their systems suffer from this disease, offered their scientific knowledge and undertook the challenging initiative to create special Units which support the dementia patient and their heavily affected environment. There are 54 Alzheimer’s Associations operating in our country. In 2007, the multitude of intractable problems led to the formation of the "Panhellenic Federation of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders", according to the motto "strength unites".

Objectives and reference to actions: The Federation’s first aim is to raise awareness of this major issue and the effects on the people, as well as the heavy economic and social effects. The way to achieve this is by announcing the progress of scientific research through mass media or lectures in halls of holy temples and municipalities and scientific conferences. One important action of our Federation is the serious scientific research on the subject of Alzheimer's disease with the relevant world-leading non-pharmaceutical treatment programs! Another ongoing scientific goal is also the recording of the patients' database according to a joined nationwide protocol. Last but not least is the special contribution to knowledge through the courses that our Federation offers to Health professionals via the modern online education system. These should be considered only as a small part of all the activities of the Panhellenic Federation of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders. Lastly, our Federation creatively participates as a member of international Associations (Alzheimer Europe, Alzheimer Disease International).
